Chapter Fourteen

Once in my empty stateroom, the necklace hanging from my neck; I hatch a plan.

First and foremost, I need to speak to Edmund. He will know enough to point me forward. How to reach Edmund? I check the clock on the wall. He should be rolling around at 7 p.m., which is in about an hour. That is, of course, if the ship allows him to come my way. After all, I had just magically appeared in the hallway. The ship had likely sensed my sudden appearance. Even if it didn’t remember who I was, it would still be suspicious of me.

Wow, am I really going to allow the ship to sink? I have to. I have no choice. Isn’t there any way around it? Any way at all? Well, I at least get to save one unknown stowaway who will have no significant footprint in the near future. I guess I’ll take it.

Crap, can I really watch 1,600 people drown? No, I can’t. I might need to be long gone by then.

I remind myself not to get too attached to anyone. Unfortunately, I don’t have a list of people who die and/or survive. That would have been handy to have.

Just don’t get close to anyone, I say to myself again. No friends on this trip. It’s not like you will ever see them again, anyway. At least, I don’t think I will. Even the youngest passengers would be well over 100 years old in my time, I remind myself.

I find myself pacing the room. When 7 p.m. rolls around and still no Edmund, I decide to look for the steward. I poke my head out in the hallway, and see his pushcart a few doors past me, and hear his silky smooth voice clearly enough. A woman is inside, giggling. Apparently, he’s in the middle of charming her pants off.

Ten minutes later, I hear a door shut, followed by knuckles rapping gently on the door next to mine

I continue pacing. My plan is about as basic as they can be. I just need the guy to actually show up and not be coerced to continue past my room. More giggling from the other side of the wall. I hear him ask something. A woman declines his offer. Likely, he asked if she needed more toiletries... or food and drinks, or having her bed turned down. He asks something else, and I hear the woman reply in the negative. He asks something else, then something again. All are met with no’s. He finally seems to accept that the woman really doesn’t want or need anything. I hear him saying his goodbyes. A door shuts. I hear the rattle of the cart coming down the hall toward my room. There is a brief pause outside my door, and I hear Edmund talking to himself—or talking to the ship inside his head. Then he continues on down the hallway, skipping me. Crap. I hustle over to the door, reach for the handle, turn it, and poke my head out.
